Williams on Race Being Used as a Social Construct to Create Systemic Oppression: InHerSight.com

Business of Creative Enterprises Executive-in-Residence Jae Williams spoke with InHerSight.com about systemic oppression, and specifically spoke about how race is used to affect marginalized groups.

Williams said that, “The concept of race in America was built on a foundation of flawed assumptions and false beliefs.”

Race is a social construct that has been used to categorize people based on physical characteristics such as skin color, facial features, and hair texture. This construct has been weaponized to justify systemic oppression and inequality, perpetuating a legacy of violence, discrimination, and exclusion. From the earliest colonial days to the present day, race has played a central role in shaping American society.
