Emerson Celebrates Black History Month: Events Throughout February

While we aren’t able to gather in person to celebrate Black History Month this year, Emerson organizations are offering a variety of places to come together online to honor and celebrate the Black community and experience.

The following events are taken from the Alumni Events page and EmConnect.

EBONI (Emerson’s Black Organization with Natural Interests) and the EBONI Alumni Association are hosting Celebrating from Home: A Virtual Black History Month Experience:

Taking Care of Ourselves: COVID and Stress in the Black Community
Thursday, February 11, 8:00-9:00 pm

In Taking Care of Ourselves, EBONI President Naomi Jones ’22 and actress Chrystee Pharris ’98 will interview Dr. James Simmons, a frontline heath care provider and on-air medical contributor to programming on NBC, CBS, Sirius Radio, DASH Radio and more; and Shor Denny, a specialist working with students and faculty exploring and mitigating personal trauma. 

Learning About Ourselves: History of EBONI Luncheon
Saturday, February 13, 12:00-2:00 pm

Join EBONI president Naomi Jones ’22 and alumni guests to discuss how EBONI has evolved over the years. Guests include Emmy Award-winner Lois Roach ’83, TV writer Susan Banks ’76, Emerson Trustee and Urban Media Group president Doug Holloway ’76, and Emerson Director of Special Projects Jae Williams ’08, MA ’16. 

Enjoying Ourselves: Name That Tune – Exploring Black Music from Motown to Hip-Hop
Saturday, February 20, 4:00-5:00 pm

Alumni and students team up to name that tune from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s. With DJ Ron Furr.

Standing Up for Ourselves: Black History Month Cypher 2021
Thursday, February 25, 8:00-10:00 pm

Spoken word performances from EBONI Alumni and Hip-Hop Society members.

Annual BLK Out Fashion Show
Friday, February 26, 7:00-8:30 pm

EBONI (Emerson’s Black Organization with Natural Interest) puts on its fourth annual BLK Out Fashion Show with a new spin. Stylist Naomi Jones will put together collections selected to highlight individuals’ beauty, inspiration, and personal style.

Emerson’s residence halls also are hosting some special Black History Month events:

Pick up your Daryl’s order in the Little Building third-floor green common room, then join RAs Naomi, Leeah D., and Alieyah on Zoom to eat, talk about the history of soul food, and watch a movie in celebration of Black History Month.
