Political Science Professor Mneesha Gelman Dissects Barr’s Asylum Ruling for Washington Post’s Monkey Cage

Assistant Professor of Political Science Mneesha Gellman published an opinion piece for The Washington Post’s Monkey Cage, an academic blog, breaking down what Attorney General William Barr’s recent ruling on asylum means in a historical context and how it makes asylum-seeking even harder in the U.S.

Countries such as El Salvador, Honduras and Mexico cannot protect vulnerable citizens from gangs and rampant violence. Police and other government officials are often beholden to gangs, and it can be difficult to tell who is calling the shots. Until these conditions change, people will continue to seek refuge.
