Flashback: When First-Year Students Wore Interesting Hats

Emerson first-year students wear beanies in this undated photo. According to the Emerson Archives, “Beanie Day” began as far back as the 1940s, and continued at least through the 1960s. In a 1969 course catalogue, Beanie Day was described like this: “Freshmen receive their purple and gold caps, signifying the beginning of their probationary period.” Archival photo
