Emerson Faculty, ArtsEmerson Win Stage Awards

Marie Mullen won an IRNE Award for her performance in ArtsEmerson's presentation of The Beauty Queen of Leenane last year. 

ArtsEmerson’s presentation of The Beauty Queen of Leenane took home two Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards, and two Performing Arts affiliated faculty members left with a total of three IRNEs at an April 23 ceremony in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Druid Theatre Company’s 20th anniversary revival of Beauty Queen, presented by ArtsEmerson in February 2017, won Best Visiting Play, and Marie Mullen (Mag Folen) took Best Visiting Actress. Also nominated were Aisling O’Sullivan for Best Visiting Actress and Marty Rea for Best Visiting Actor.

Affiliated faculty member Matthew Stern won Best Music Director in two categories: Large Stage (Huntington Theatre Company’s Merrily We Roll Along, winner of Best Musical, Large Stage) and Small Stage (SpeakEasy Stage’s The Bridges of Madison County).

Paul Daigneault, also an affiliated faculty member, won Best Director (Play, Midsize) for SpeakEasy’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, which also won Best Play in the category.

Emerson faculty and alumni and ArtsEmerson racked up a total of 20 IRNE nominations this year.

Elliot Norton Award nominations

Emersonians also had a number of nominations for Elliot Norton Awards, given by the Boston Theater Critics Association. Nominees include:

Home (ArtsEmerson): Outstanding Design, Large Theater

Affiliated faculty member Marianna Bassham: Outstanding Actress, Midsize Theater for her work in Constellations (Underground Railway Theater) and Julius Caesar (Actors' Shakespeare Project)

Alumna Aina Adler '13: Outstanding Actress, Small or Fringe Theater for her work in Faceless (Zeitgeist Stage Company).

Affiliated faculty member Rachel Bertone: Outstanding Director, Midsize Theater, for her work on In the Heights (Wheelock Family Theatre) and Gypsy (Lyric Stage Company of Boston).

Affiliated faculty member Matthew Stern: Outstanding Music Director for his work in Merrily We Roll Along (Huntington Theatre Company).

The winners will be announced May 21.
