Award-winning Broadway actress Emily Skeggs ’12 is featured in the ABC miniseries When We Rise, which premieres Monday.

When We Rise tells the story of the gay rights movement from the 1969 Stonewall riots to present day. Skeggs plays a younger version of women’s rights leader Roma Guy, a character played by Mary-Louise Parker (Angels in America, Weeds) in six of the series’ seven episodes.

In addition to Parker, the series stars Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential, Memento); Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under, Brothers and Sisters); and Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire).

According to ABC, the miniseries “chronicles the real-life personal and political struggles, set-backs and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today.”

Skeggs is best known for her performance of Medium Alison in the 2015 Broadway production of Fun Home, a musical adapted from Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir. She was nominated for a Tony Award and won a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance for the role.

Last year, Skeggs played Shy Sarah in Don’t Think Twice, Mike Birbiglia’s comedy about an improv troupe.

When We Rise airs Monday, February 27, 9:00 pm ET, on ABC.
