Two Emersonians at SXSW

Two Emersonians are scheduled to participate in this year’s celebrated South By Southwest (SXSW) festival March 7-16 in Austin, Texas.

Iliza Shlesinger ’05, the youngest comedian and only female to hold the title of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, is scheduled to make multiple appearances. At the Rooftop Comedy show on Sunday, March 9, Shlesinger will show off her comedic talent on stage with other rising stand-up stars.

SXSW conferences and festivals offer the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies to foster creative and professional growth alike, according to the SXSW website.

Marketing Communication faculty member Jenessa Carder, MA ’11, and her colleagues from SapientNitro will host the session Building the Future Landscape of Geofencing, on Saturday, March 8. SapientNitro is an interactive marketing, creative design, and technology service in Boston.

The utilization of geo-information by marketers and government organizations is becoming widely adopted, prompting examinations of personal privacy and business implications that geographically associated information touches arises, according to the SXSW website.

“Geofencing,” Carder said, “is the intersection of location (our experiences tied to a place) and boundaries (virtual lines) and data (collection of knowledge.) It helps us understand the micro-context of a consumer at any given point in their life’s story.”
