Charles E. McCarry, production designer-in-residence in the Visual and Media Arts Department, spent the fall and much of winter in Shanghai, China, where he provided production design for Taiwanese producer Chen Yu Shan’s Lady and the Lair.

Working on location and in studio with a Chinese crew, McCarry created dozens of settings for this 45-episode Mandarin language romantic drama.

During a break, McCarry flew to Taipei, where he was invited to guest lecture about production design and art direction at Taipei National University of the Arts.

McCarry also visited Wern Ying Hwarng, his former design student from Carnegie-Mellon, where he used to teach, on the set of the new film The Assassin, where he also met with noted Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien.
