Ray ’14 blends film, marketing in Los Angeles

Alyssa Ray ’14 has wanted to work in television and film since she was a young child. At Emerson, she worked on the student-run Emerson Independent Film Festival.

Now, the Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, native is finishing her senior year at the new Emerson College Los Angeles, which opened to students January 12. Ray, a Marketing Communication major, scored a development internship with Red Wagon Entertainment Films, which produced The Great Gatsby, Gladiator, and Stuart Little. Ray said she will assist with reading over scripts and research, and will provide general assistance to office staff and producers.

“The idea of LA itself is so exciting, especially because I’ve never been there before,” Ray said. “I’ve just fallen in love with Emerson, the people and the professors. Emerson has offered so many study abroad experiences, and I’ve wanted to pick up all of these opportunities.”

Ray mixes her marketing knowledge with her passion for film. She worked for EmComm, a student-operated, faculty-advised marketing communication agency that provides students with hands-on experience in marketing, public relations, and promotions, in addition to launching the Emerson Independent Film Festival.

She worked with a group of Emerson filmmakers to showcase their work for the public and a panel of judges.

“It was so much fun and it was a really great opportunity to see that there’s a lot of talent at this school,” she said. “I wanted to be a part of it, be a part of the industry and help these filmmakers bring their movies to light. I think I really want to go into producing.”

aEmerson has allowed Ray to dive into interests inside and outside of her major. That’s something she’ll continue to do at Emerson College Los Angeles.

“I’ve loved every moment at Emerson. I really feel like this school has been a great fit for me,” she said.
