Emerson athletes recognized by GNAC
Three Emerson athletes were recognized March 25 for their above-and-beyond efforts by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
Junior Max Smith, a midfielder on the Men’s Lacrosse team, was named GNAC Player of the Week. Smith proved to be the lynchpin in Emerson’s 2–0 week as the Lions secured wins over the Regis Pride and Daniel Webster Eagles.
On the week, Smith posted seven goals—two in a double-overtime thriller over Regis.
Smith was integral in the Lions’ win against Daniel Webster, putting in five goals to lead Emerson in a 10–6 win. In addition, he was .500 in faceoffs on the week while picking up eight ground balls along the way.
Another lacrosse player, freshman Benjamin Byrd, was named GNAC Lacrosse Rookie of the Week. Byrd stepped up huge for the Lions last week, especially for his efforts against Regis. He collected not only a hat trick but also scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Lions its first win of the season. The Men’s Lacrosse team returns to action Tuesday, March 26, at 5:00 pm against Rivier College at Rotch Field in Boston.
Men’s Tennis player freshman Vincent Castenelli was named GNAC Rookie of the Week. He was flawless last week as he made quick straight sets work of Lesley University and Suffolk University opponents in singles, while pairing up with two teammates to collect 8–1 and 8–2 wins in doubles en route to Emerson taking two 9–0 sweeps over Lesley and Suffolk. The Men’s Tennis team will play Albertus Magnus in East Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday, March 30, at 1:00 pm.
