Student works as volunteer firefighter over break
Students sad that winter break is coming to a close are telling us about their extracurricular excursions on social media—everything from inventing a new cookie recipe to making a difference in their communities.
At 19 years old, Abagael McCauley ’15 tweeted that she spent her winter break working as a volunteer firefighter in her hometown of Garden City, New York.
“Being able to help people in a time of need is an incredible feeling,” McCauley said. “And having to hold a vast amount of trust in your fellow firefighters when entering dangerous situations teaches you so much about yourself and other people. It’s amazing.”
McCauley, a double major in Marketing Communication and Political Communication, began working for her local fire department last July—following in the footsteps of her father, Blake McCauley, a former New York City firefighter.
Her time at the firehouse during winter break has not been action-packed, but McCauley is enjoying it as a learning experience.
“I’m the only woman at the fire department, so during winter break I tried to prove myself,” she said. “I’m making sure they understand I’m a valuable member, and I’m finding my place. Luckily, everyone there loves me.”
Other Emerson students chimed in on Twitter about what they did over vacation.
“I invented a new kind of cookie (Earl Grey sugar cookie!) with my friends and reviewed #pippin!” tweeted Emily White ’16, using the handle @ewhitelights.
“I’m using my break to take a Comparative Politics online course! Learning about governments around the globe!” tweeted Megan Mitchell ’14, using the handle @ImMeganMitchell.
“I went to the Granby Zoo in Quebec on (New Year’s Eve) and saw 1-week-old giraffes,” tweeted student Alex DePalma '16, @AlexDePalma93. “They also had snow leopards outside in 8 (degree) temps!”
“I made a brownie mug! (Most of my winter break activities have involved food),” tweeted Michelle Douvris '16 using the handle @HeyItsMDouv.
