First-Year Writing Program recognized

The First-Year Writing Program, in the Writing, Literature and Publishing Department, has been selected to receive a certificate of excellence from the Conference on College Composition and Communication.

The award will be presented at the group’s annual conference in Las Vegas on March 15, 2013.

According to WLP Professor John Trimbur, in applying for the award, the department put special emphasis on how the writing program developed a curriculum that integrates negotiation of cultural and linguistic differences, civic engagement, and public writing.

The program developed several community-centered projects, which included working with students at inner–city high schools and the implementation of a weekend creative writing program at the schools called EmersonWRITES; an English language class for Spanish–speaking maintenance workers at Emerson; a collaboration with Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Medellin, Colombia, that included writing workshops; and publicizing Boston-area exhibitions of emerging student artists.
