Simpson at center of presidential-debate discussion
A woman has not moderated a presidential debate since Emerson’s Senior Leader-in-Residence Carole Simpson did so in 1992. Then an ABC News anchor, Simpson moderated the debate among candidates Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Ross Perot.
Twenty years later, three teenage girls are working to persuade the Commission on Presidential Debates that it’s time to name another female moderator for one of this year’s presidential debates. The young political activists launched a petition on change.org to gather signatures from supporters across the nation. They currently have about 120,000 signatures.
The girls’ campaign has captured national media attention, and Simpson has discussed their efforts in several recent news articles and broadcast interviews.
