Corporate social responsibility speakers series open to Emersonians

Students and faculty are invited to sit in on discussions of Corporate Social Responsibility during classes for strategic communicators, one of which takes place today (Tuesday, February 22) at 6:00 pm in Tufte 1014, and on select days that feature guest speakers throughout the rest of the semester.

Led by Art Stewart ’82, the discussion on February 22 features guest speaker Lucy McGovern, senior funding advisor for Oxfam America’s Humanitarian Response Department. Her discussion topics are global sustainable development, sustainability reporting, and trends and legislation regarding corporate social responsibility.

During her three years at Oxfam, McGovern has raised more than $20 million from private institutions for its global emergency response programs, including relief efforts addressing drought in Ethiopia, hurricanes on the U.S. Gulf Coast, conflict in Sudan, cholera in Zimbabwe, cyclones and flooding in Southeast Asia, drought and flooding in Central America, as well as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the current flooding in Pakistan.

Maria Sillanpaa, scheduled for February 22, is ill and unable to participate.

The next class open to students and faculty is set for 6:00 pm Monday, March 14, and features Robert Pojasek speaking on “Local sustainability: government, citizenry, and communities.” Pojasek is senior program director at Capaccio Environmental Engineering, and assists clients with developing and facilitating the planning and implementation of sustainability programs and management systems at both the corporate and facility level.
