Jeff Seglin discusses the business side of publishing

We recently caught up with Department of Writing, Literature and Publishing Associate Professor and Tribune Media syndicated Columnist Jeff Seglin to talk about the business side of publishing.

Seglin’s general ethics column “The Right Thing” runs weekly in newspapers in the United States and Canada. He is also the author of The Right Thing: Conscience, Profit and Personal Responsibility in Today’s Business which was named as one of the “Best Business Books of 2003” by the Library Journal.

Before 1998, Seglin was an executive editor at Inc. magazine. He has been an ethics fellow at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies since 2001 and was a resident fellow at the Center for the Study of Values in Public Life at Harvard University from 1998-1999.

In the past year students in Seglin’s Column Writing Workshop have had their writing placed in such highly regarded publications as Salon.com, The Weekly Dig, Worcester Magazine, and Skirt!

We asked Seglin not just about the art of column writing, but the art of selling a column to a publication.
