WHY: Producing a full–scale live musical for television presents unique challenges. Live acting. Live singing. No “do-overs.” In 2013, NBC broadcast The Sound of Music live on television with nearly 18.6 million viewers tuning in for the performance—the first live movie event of its kind in more than 50 years. Following the successful presentation of The Sound of Music Live!, NBC decided to bring the classic Broadway musical Peter Pan to television. The show-stopping musical, which starred Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, was produced on a $10 million budget. It was broadcast live from the Grumman Studios in New York on December 4, 2014, with more than 9 million viewers watching. Glenn Weiss will discuss the exciting challenges of live television and provide exclusive behind-the-scenes insight about what it takes to direct a musical for TV.
