Announcement

Voice@Emerson, Emerson College’s Voice Technology Initiative, is pleased to offer a Voice Technology Design and Coding CertificateBootcamp, a first in the industry, in collaboration with Stack Education, a Boston-based education company that works with higher education institutions to create innovation economy programming.

“As Emerson College was founded as a school of oratory, it is incredibly fitting that the College is forging a path forward for professionals eager to gain essential skills for successful careers in the emerging field of voice technology and design,” said Sanjay Pothen, Emerson Launch Director.

Voice@Emerson is a program of Emerson Launch, which equips innovators, entrepreneurs, and creatives with entrepreneurial design thinking skills that provide Emerson students with real-world experience before they graduate.

Beginning on February 29, the 18-week interactive course meets three times each week in the evening from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., combining both remote and in-person classes. Students accepted into the bootcamp program will be taught by local industry practitioners and will work on an industry project, gaining real work experience developing a technical solution to a real problem for a local company, and receiving feedback and mentorship.

Interested applicants may visit www.emersonvoicetech.com to learn more about the program.

At the end of this course, graduates will have gained the skills to:

  • Utilize VUI (Voice User Interface) and VUX (Voice User Experience) industry best practices to design voice technology applications and voice interactions
  • Design and code Amazon Alexa Voice Skills and other voice applications from the ground up
  • Build web applications from start to finish, using JavaScript, Node.js, HTML, CSS, and more, including building and interacting with RESTful APIs
  • Apply their technical skills in real world settings, navigating the challenges of communicating under pressure, collaborating with cross functional teams, and more.

By 2022, smart speakers are projected to be in 70 million U.S. households and Voice Search is expected to make up 50% of all searches by 2020, according to The Economist.

Stack Education, an education company that partners with colleges and universities to provide skilled bootcamps to the 21st Century Workforce, will implement the program.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Emerson on this first of its kind program,” said Peggy Yu, CEO of Stack Education. “The accelerated Voice Technology and Design curriculum gives a broader group of people access to the practical knowledge of how to design and code for voice, and receive real hands-on experience for future career opportunities in this emerging field.”

About Voice@Emerson

Emerson College was built on a foundation of voice communication. Now, in the 21st century, those same foundations are paving the way for the next “evolution of expression.” Having started as a school of oratory, it is clear that communication, marketing, speech, linguistics and thus, voice technology, are part of our DNA. Voice@Emerson is Emerson College’s voice technology initiative, which continues to support this mission alongside today’s fast moving technology. As the world returns to spoken word – from voice assistants, to podcasts, to speech-to-text dictation, to hundreds of other newly-trending use cases – along with Emerson’s creative minds at work, Voice@Emerson aims to foster and launch countless projects and efforts to continue leading the voice space.
