Donation Box in the Max for Asylum-Seekers at the Border

November 3, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - November 17, 2019 @ 12:00 pm

This year Active Minds is focusing on mental health as the wide scale public health issue it is. Right now in the world there are people fleeing their homes in search of safety for themselves and their children. This journey often will harshly affect a person’s physical and mental health. For the month of October, every week Active Minds will release some information regarding the situation currently on the border, culminating in a donation drive.
Here’s how you can help:
Active Minds and Alpha Phi Omega have partnered to host a donation drive for asylum-seekers at the border. By donating menstrual products (tampons and pads) during our campus wide supply drive, you’ll be playing a part in the effort to restore some humanity in the individuals asking for asylum in this country. In addition to a physical drive, we will have a box in the Max during the two weeks of collection to make it super easy to donate. Collected materials will be shipped to Brownsville, TX to be distributed to asylum seekers by the Angry Tias and Abuela, a local group of activist located on the Texan-Mexican border.

Hosted by: Active Minds at Emerson College, Alpha Phi Omega

Bright Lights Film Series: ‘Adam’

November 12, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Bright Family Screening Room, 558 Washington Street
Boston, 02111 United States
Free

Co-presented with Wicked Queer; part of Trans Awareness Week

Directed by Rhys Ernest; comedy; English; 95 minutes; USA (2019)

Awkward, self-conscious Adam Freeman (Nicholas Alexander) has just finished his junior year of high school in 2006. When his cool older sister, Casey (Margaret Qualley), suggests he visit her in New York for the summer, Adam has visions of meeting a girl and finally gaining some actual life experience. The fantasy doesn’t materialize exactly as expected. Casey has enthusiastically embraced life amidst Brooklyn’s young LGBTQ community, and invites Adam to tag along with her to queer bars, marriage equality rallies, and other happenings. When Adam falls at first sight for Gillian (Bobbi Menuez), a smart, beautiful young woman in this new crowd, she mistakenly assumes he is trans. Flummoxed and enamored, he haplessly goes along with her assumption, resulting in an increasingly complex comedy — and tragedy — of errors he’s ill-equipped to navigate.

Discussion led by the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition to follow. F, LGBTQ, SJ
