This year Active Minds is focusing on mental health as the wide scale public health issue it is. Right now in the world there are people fleeing their homes in search of safety for themselves and their children. This journey often will harshly affect a person’s physical and mental health. For the month of October, every week Active Minds will release some information regarding the situation currently on the border, culminating in a donation drive.
Here’s how you can help:
Active Minds and Alpha Phi Omega have partnered to host a donation drive for asylum-seekers at the border. By donating menstrual products (tampons and pads) during our campus wide supply drive, you’ll be playing a part in the effort to restore some humanity in the individuals asking for asylum in this country. In addition to a physical drive, we will have a box in the Max during the two weeks of collection to make it super easy to donate. Collected materials will be shipped to Brownsville, TX to be distributed to asylum seekers by the Angry Tias and Abuela, a local group of activist located on the Texan-Mexican border.
Hosted by: Active Minds at Emerson College, Alpha Phi Omega

Thirty years after Robert Mapplethorpe’s death, the world still cannot turn away from the magnetism and emotional complexity of his influential photographs. With their startling union of erotic heat and cool classicism, his controversial works were images of a generation, shattering mainstream conceptions of conventional beauty. Triptych (Eyes of One on Another) is the daring collaboration of a group of visionary artists working together for the first time, inspired by and featuring images from Mapplethorpe’s stunning body of work.
Composed by Bryce Dessner (guitarist for Grammy Award–winning band The National), featuring libretto by Korde Arrington Tuttle, poetry by Essex Hemphill and Patti Smith, and sung by the eight-person choral ensemble Roomful of Teeth, Triptych is a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration of artists and art forms. Mapplethorpe’s uncanny ability to upend beliefs on race, gender and politics in both edifying and reckless ways is celebrated and examined here through haunting, unforgettable music and large-scale projections of his work. Triptych is a bold tribute to one of the most brilliant photographers of the 20th century.
This Kander and Ebb musical is set in 1935, when the world faces an uncertain political and economic future. At the height of the Great Depression, the government-funded Federal Theatre Project gathers a group of performers to tell the story of optimistic Flora Meszaros, a newly graduated art student. She embarks on a career as a fashion illustrator in Manhattan, and soon falls in love with Harry, a fellow artist. But Harry has a secret—he turns out to be an idealistic communist. Is Flora herself a “red menace” or just that good ol’ classic Broadway standby — a gal in love?
Flora, The Red Menace is the first collaboration between the creators of Cabaret and Chicago. Although the original Broadway production ran for only 87 performances, critics and the public alike were enchanted by the show’s 19-year-old star, Liza Minnelli, whose breakout performance in the title role won her a Tony Award.

Join us for a spectacular evening with Bob Ross, paint, grape juice, and squirrels! Have the once in a lifetime chance to learn from the one and only, Bob Ross. And yes, he will actually be there, or at least a resemblance of him will attend. We will be painting the magical night sky of someplace unknown and take home your masterpiece at the end! This makes for a great gift to a loved one, gift for yourself, or merch for your Etsy/eBay store. Drinks, 16″x20″ wrapped canvases, paint, brushes, music, fun, relaxation, and squirrel atmosphere will be provided. We will be starting the class at 8 pm sharp and should expect to take 1 hour and 30 minutes. This program will be held in the open space with a big, red wall on the left side of the security desk. On the side, we will have another RA collecting interest forms from students passing by. These Interest forms will ask for name, email, what they’d like to see us paint next, and what nights they’re available to attend a Paint Night.
Spots are limited to 15! Please RSVP on emconnect today!
