Discussion: Free Speech and Insurrection

March 22, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm EDT

Known as the Queen of Rights, the First Amendment protects our most basic rights. Thanks to those freedoms, Americans are able to protest, assemble, and say what they will about public figures. But should those public officials have the same freedoms?

This lecture will consider First Amendment freedoms in terms of political speech. If we start to hold public officials accountable for spreading misinformation, as some law professors argue, do we lose the foundation of our liberal democracy?

Meg Mott is a Marlboro College Professor of Politics Emerita and an affiliated faculty member at Emerson College, who has developed a series titled “Debating Our Rights” on the first 10 amendments that brings civil discussions on contentious issues to public libraries and colleges.
