“To do more, be more and give back more” were the inspired words Rose Shumow received from a stranger about her late husband and Emerson journalism professor, Moses Shumow, who left a legacy of giving voices to the voiceless.
Scholars are seeking new methods for teaching responsible journalism, and activists are advocating for the media and civic systems that best reflect equitable and vibrant societies. On Feb. 28, in the Paramount Center’s Black Box Theater, they will gather from across continents to discuss solutions at the inaugural Social Justice & Media Symposium.

Throughout the fall semester, first-year graduate students in Strategic Marketing Communication (SMC) explored the field’s core components and wide range of career possibilities. During one evening class, those possibilities came to life with a visit from eight alumni who sat in the same seats not long ago—and are now thriving professionals.

In the remote mountains of western Ecuador, a small group of families operate an ecolodge and care for the surrounding 1,800 acres of cloud forest reserve. That’s where Emerson students will travel this summer, to help the families grow their business. In the process, they will earn college credit while studying biodiversity conservation, local cultural preservation, sustainable tourism, and marketing.
Boston anticipates its senior citizen population to grow nearly 50 percent by 2030. To better serve these residents, the city organized the Age Strong Commission, and Cassandra Baptista ’11, MA ’19 is leading the effort to promote positive messaging around growing older.
