Emerson mourns student Jocelyn Straus

October 15, 2014

In an email to the Emerson community, President Lee Pelton shared news that Jocelyn Amelia Straus ’18, who was a first-year student studying Political Communication and was in the College’s Honors Program, died unattended in her Colonial Residence Hall room Tuesday night. Boston Police responded to assist the College’s staff. The Boston Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

In his message to the community, President Pelton wrote:

“Late last night, several of my Emerson colleagues and I visited with some of you who knew Jocelyn and I want you to know that we all share your deep sense of loss. She was a bright light taken from this world far too soon. Words cannot express our grief.

We will gather to remember and celebrate Jocelyn’s life at a memorial service at a later date, details about which we will share soon.”

Staff from Counseling and Psychological Services and members of the Office of Spiritual Life are being made available to the community today.

Straus was a native of El Cerrito, California.
